Independent Research Firm Reveals Data Center-to-Data Center Traffic For 68 Percent of Enterprises On Track To Double or Triple Over The Next 2-4 Years
SAN JOSE, Calif. — May 10, 2010 — Infineta Systems (“Infineta”) today announced the results of an enterprise survey focusing on the traffic characteristics and growth for data-center-to-data center interconnects. The survey of 106 U.S. IT decision-makers responsible for data center network or storage operations revealed that data center-to-data center traffic is exploding. For 68 percent of respondents, traffic volume will double or triple over the next 2-4 years. Commissioned by Infineta and conducted by Forrester Consulting, the survey highlights the current trends for moving bandwidth-intensive critical traffic across the ever-growing wide area network connecting an organization’s data centers.
Key Survey Highlights:
- Nearly half of respondents have 5Gbps or more running between their data centers;
- The majority of enterprises will experience a doubling or tripling of data-center-to-data center traffic over the next 2-4 years;
- More than two-thirds of respondents say they will need to upgrade their data center-to-data center WAN links within the next18 months based on their current growth trends;
- Almost 40 percent of respondents anticipate using long distance ‘live’ migration between data center sometime in the next three years.
“The bandwidth upgrade treadmill is one of the most limiting and costly realities facing enterprise IT today,” says Raj Kanaya, co-founder and CEO, Infineta Systems. “It is time to alleviate this enormous burden that customers face today by bringing an efficient, high-speed inter-data center fabric to this part of the infrastructure.”
The full findings of the survey are in the newly published May 2010 Forrester Consulting Thought Leadership paper commissioned by Infineta Systems entitled, “The Future of Data Center Wide Area Networking” available for download at www.infineta.com/forrester.
