Velocity Transport Engine™
Infineta’s Velocity Transport Engine incorporates a number of transport-layer optimization techniques to deliver unmatched performance for all inter-data center WAN traffic. By making key resource decisions at wire speed, the Velocity Transport Engine enables Infineta appliances to maintain up to 10Gbps traffic rates. Multi-Gigabit speeds can be reliably maintained even in the face of detrimental WAN characteristics, such as packet loss.
Key features of the Velocity Transport Engine are listed below:
Flow scalability
The Velocity Transport Engine enables each flow traversing an Infineta appliance can scale to a rate of 1Gbps at any distance. It does so by:
- Improving on classic techniques such as window scaling, selective acknowledgements (SACKs) by relying on additional proprietary network indicators to adjust congestion windows for flows.
- Making use of Infineta’s proprietary congestion control algorithm, which is able to fairly and continuously redistribute WAN resources between active flows.
This set of features allows Infineta appliances to fill the WAN with any number of connections at any distance.
Flow resiliency
The Velocity Transport Engine ensures a high level of resiliency for flows traversing WANs that suffer from network anomalies and errors. It does so by:
- Safeguarding against packet loss by retransmitting any lost packets on demand, instead of relying on the endpoint to retransmit lost packets. This method is superior to error-correction type techniques used by traditional WAN optimization devices, whereby a certain level of loss is assumed and a minimum amount of bandwidth is permanently sacrificed. Moreover, in traditional methods, loss protection is never guaranteed 100%, whereas with the Velocity Transport Engine, the endpoint never needs to resend a packet because of loss on the WAN.
- Delivering all packets to the remote location in order of transmission. Depending on the routing policy in use by the enterprise or the service provider, it is entirely likely that packets are received by the remote location out of order. The Velocity Transport Engine guarantees packet order and will reorder packets for each flow before forwarding them to the remote endpoint.
This set of features enables Infineta appliances to accelerate traffic over any type of WAN link, be it a private leased line or an IP VPN.
Optimal WAN utilization
Not only does the Velocity Transport Engine optimize singular flows, it also ensures optimal WAN resource utilization at the macro level. It does so by keeping a dynamically updated, end-to-end view of the entire WAN link and all flows competing for bandwidth. This resource allocation view is updated every time a connection is established or terminated, and when an established connection becomes more or less aggressive. The end result is a WAN that is fully utilized at all times, be it 10 connections filling a 10Gbps link or a 100,000 connections filling a 1Gbps link.
